Chopping Onions

There are lots of different ways to cut an onion. Here’s a basic method. If you have nothing else to do of an evening, look up instruction videos on YouTube, then sharpen your knife and practice, practice, practice. Knife skills come with time.

Tools

  • Chopping board
  • Sharp knife or cleaver

Method

  1. Cut off the ends of the onion and peel off the skin.
  2. Cut the onion in half, lengthwise.
  3. Slice into slices, top to bottom.
That’s sliced onion: sometimes, you want fine slices, sometimes chunkier.
  4. Turn each half of slices and cut again, side to side.
    And your onions are chopped.

‘Finely chopped’means thin slices (say 3mm) sliced thinly again.

‘Roughly chopped’ means slicing the onion in four or five slices, and then the same again.
